Club Polo Nacional was officially formed in 2002 as a not-for-profit company by a group of polo players from the Montreal and Ottawa areas who were interested in encouraging new members and beginning players as well as supporting charitable causes through polo exhibition matches.
Polo season generally runs from mid-May to mid-September with club chukkars and games played Saturday and Sunday afternoons, weather permitting, and club chukkars on Thursday evenings. Alfredo Viel Temperley and Santos Perkins, professional players from Argentina rated 4 and 5 goals, respectively, play with the Club from mid-June to mid-September and are also available to give polo and riding lessons on a private basis. The Club also arranges various clinics from time to time including umpire clinics (coordinate through the USPA), hitting clinics and player clinics at the beginning of the season.
In 2006, the Club supported three charitable organizations: Sainte Justine's Children's Hospital, Cedars Breast Cancer Clinic (part of the Royal Victoria Hospital) and the Montreal General Hospital Trauma Unit through fundraisers. The fundraising events include a champagne reception and lunch at tented tables catered by one of Montreal’s fine caterers and entertainment for the guests through two exciting polo games with club members and other amateur players as well as professional players from Argentina, the United States and, this year, Australia who have played in the US and Europe.
In addition to the major events, the Club has six smaller club tournaments during the polo season which are sponsored by Club members and give members the opportunity to play in a competitive tournament situation. Most weekend games and tournaments are followed by a casual barbeque or lunch at the end of the field for players and Club members with members rotating to organize the post-polo festivities.
During the off-season, members still have occasional social get togethers – ranging from dinners to skating on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa and broomball in the winter.
The Club is a member club of both Polo Canada and the United States Polo Association. All Club members are members of Polo Canada and most are also members of the USPA.
